Tigre Tacos Stoke Newington

An eternal home for London’s best-loved taqueria.

Some of our favourite eating locations in London were as quickly as street-food motors or pop-up residencies – anticipate Four Legs at The Compton Arms, Imad’s Syrian Kitchen or The Waterhouse Project. This SoCal inspired hangout on Stoke Newington High Street – the number one brick-and-mortar outpost from the Tigre Tacos team – is another name to function to the list. It all started as a street-food business enterprise linked to Bermondsey’s Nine Lives bar, wherein Ramon Ramos slings zingy tacos out of the resident taco truck to accompany a menu of Picantes and Palomas. Next came a pop-up at The Gunmakers in Clerkenwell, wherein the menu is served with craft beers and tequila and tonics. Both are nevertheless open, but in October 2021 the team in the end opened their first eternal spot that’s all their own. On the Stokey cease of the number one thoroughfare that runs amongst Dalston and Stoke Newington, that may be a stripped-back, cantina-style restaurant on top of one of the area’s best-loved bars, Doña.

London Restaurants – Taste the Food

All the Tigre classics are present and correct. There are not any meat tacos on the menu here, the simplest fish and plant-based definitely options. Order as many as seems lower price on your party – each plate comes with gentle corn tortillas piled with toppings which encompass Baja fish, octopus or queso. Grilled king prawns are slathered in notably spiced habanero sauce and cooled down with smooth pineapple salsa; crunchy courgettes and corn are topped with touchy hibiscus flowers and crumbly feta, and the vegan mango and kohlrabi ceviche is wrapped in a traditional blue tostada. It’s an order as you go, tuck into a few issues arrives the first form of place – a spot for settling in and making your way through the menu. Top tip: from 6pm–10pm you may order tacos downstairs in Doña, the female-led basement Mezcal bar wherein there’s nightly live music and pitching up on the crimson and crimson sofas feels a bit like settling into someone’s living room. (Note: there are steep stairs proper all of the manners right all the way down to Doña)

Mexican beers are a welcome icy antidote to the fiery food, and the wine list is short but considered – we tried a crisp, citrusy Vinho Verde. Finish with the mezcal Paloma: mezcal, crimson grapefruit soda, rosemary salt and hundreds of lime.
