World’s Underground and Underwater Luxury Hotel Set to Open in Shanghai Advancements in technology are helping service industries in creating new experiences and new entertainment forms for their customers. A decade ago, the idea of an underwater and underground hotel would have seemed too futuristic to even perceive. Today, it is becoming a reality.

Only recently opened, the monolithic project, officially known as the Sheshan Shimao Quarry Hotel, took a total of 6 years to complete and is a result of the efforts made by a team of over 5,000 engineers, architects, and designers. The lavish hotel lies within the heart of a vacant quarry located in Songjiang District, Shanghai.

What is exciting to see is that within the time of building it, the project did not deviate far from its original concept and looks strikingly similar to the artwork drawn out several years ago.

So what does this hotel have in store for the world?

The luxury hotel rises to a total of 19 floors, two of which are submerged underwater. Distributed amongst these floors are be 337 rooms which will be housing an estimated 500,000 people each year.

The total cost amounted to around 1 billion yuan (about $157 million), but the investment will surely pay off. The hotel boasts an underwater restaurant that faces an aquarium, offering customers the experience to dine while enjoying the beauty of aquatic life. Tucked away within the precinct of the building is a conference room that can hold an impressive 1,000 people. There’s also a glamorous ballroom, and numerous restaurants and cafes on the ground floor for visitors to enjoy.

Facilities for rock climbing and cable sliding are also available along with all the many services one can expect from a five-star hotel.

The hotel is nothing short of a marvelous achievement and a testament to the development humans are making in architecture.
